Multiplayer gaming can be the key to making friends and connecting with people around the world that you would have never met if you were not playing multiplayer games. Nevertheless, language barriers are frequently the cause of the communication problems that are the reason why people cannot make such connections and Roblox’s new AI chat translator tries to solve this problem.
On Monday, Roblox announced the launch of real-time AI chat translations in Roblox, thus, its 70 million daily active users will be able to communicate with each other in up to 16 different languages, among which are English, Chinese, Spanish, Korean, and other.
“Thanks to our new real-time AI chat translations, we’ve made something possible on Roblox that isn’t even possible in the physical world: the possibility of people who speak different languages to communicate with each other in a virtual environment without any problems, like “seamless” adapting to the situation, was quoted by Daniel Sturman, CTO of Roblox.
Through the translation feature, users can benefit the text chat service in any Roblox experience that has imposed Roblox’s in-experience text chat. The chat window will by itself, translate any text into the person’s native language without the user having to take any further action.
The user should not get rid of the original text. On the contrary, if they want to go back to the original message, they can just click the button next to the translated one.
To be the translator, Roblox has created its own unified, transformer-based translation language model (LLM), which is capable to translate the combination of 16 languages at once into one template, a method that is less time-consuming and resource-demanding than creating individual templates that translate each pair, for a total of 256 different templates.
Roblox stated that it is determined to enhance the validity of its model and thus, it will come up with a tool that allows people to provide feedback on translations, who can report what has been translated incorrectly or even a better translation.
The template is already out and ready to use today. The total list of languages, which are in the order of their popularity, is English, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Polish, and Vietnamese.
